T-Ball is designed for boys and girls 5-6 years old (4 years old if comfortable playing sports). Players learn the fundamentals of the game in 16 sesions over an 8-week period from professional coaches who are assisted by area college and high school players.
During the first several sessions the players rotate throught a series of learning stations designed to make them comfortable with all basic aspects of the game. Team concepts, along with scrimmages, are introduced gradually over the course of the program. Girls will be introduced to the fundamentals of windmill pitching.
Parents, who may also a lot from the coaches, are expected to stay during the sessions, help with the drills and become coaches themselves. All the players will get a chance to play at Yogi Berra Stadium. The emphasis on the program is learning and having fun.
COACH PITCH
We hope to begin the Coach Pitch Program early April.
Coach Pitch is designed for kids from 6-8 years old. After reviewing some of the fundamental skills during the first two weeks, the players move quickly to scrimmages and games. Kids will be assigned to teams and will have a schedule for pratices and games. League standings are not kept but this program is much more game oriented than T-Ball. Parents usually serve as coaches but there are always professional coaches, college and high school players on the field to help with the practices and games. This disivision wll also have a chance to play at Yogi Berra Stadium near the end of the season.
Girls are welcome to play in this program but softball will not be taught . There is a town run softball coach pitch division that is primarily for girls.
Middle School
The Middle School Program is for kids in 7th and 8th grades. Each of Montclair's Middle Schools (Glenfield, Mt. Hebron and Renaissance) fields at least one team and teams from Glen Ridge, West Orange and other towns may participate. The teams play on a regulation size diamond (90 ft bases, etc) usually at Nishaune Park, Brookdale and Woodman Field. Teachers and parent often split the coaching of the teams.
